How long can you expect crank bearings to last?

I have a 93 Cannondal R900, and the crank is strarting to creak under high loads.

Are you straddling the bicycle ( riding with one foot on a pedal while the other hangs freely)?
This will wear out the bearings to the point of squeals and eventual seizure. When that happens, removal requires all your strength to loosen the damaged part.
Lubricate them with motor oil ( any grade), to reduce noise.
